Every “best VIN check” list has the same problem: the writer picks a winner, and the winner is usually whoever pays them. The truth is less convenient. The best VIN check in Europe depends entirely on where the car has lived, because every provider’s report is limited by which national registers and insurance databases it can actually reach.

Here is the split by use case, with 2026 single-report prices.

If you need accident damage and archive photos: carVertical (~€25–31)

carVertical is the strongest product in this category for damage history, and it is worth saying so plainly. Its reports show damage diagrams, frequently estimated repair costs, clear odometer timelines, and — the part that catches sellers out — archived photos from previous listings and auctions. Coverage of Central and Eastern European cars is particularly deep.

It is also among the most expensive single reports on the market, and bundles are where its price becomes reasonable if you are cross-shopping several cars.

Buy it when: the car is expensive enough that undisclosed accident repair is the risk you most want to eliminate.

If the car is Czech or Slovak: Cebia (~€23.90)

Cebia’s integration with Czech and Slovak insurance and inspection databases is deeper than any pan-European provider’s. For a car from that region, a local specialist beats a generalist.

Buy it when: the car is registered in, or imported from, Czechia or Slovakia.

If the car came from North America: CARFAX Europe (~€39.99)

CARFAX’s North American database is unmatched, and a meaningful number of European used cars are US or Canadian imports with a salvage or flood history that European registers never recorded. It is the most expensive option here, and for a purely domestic European car it is usually poor value.

Buy it when: the VIN starts with 1, 4 or 5, or the documents show a US or Canadian origin.

If the car is Polish or German-to-Polish: autoDNA (~€24.99)

autoDNA’s coverage across Poland and Germany is strong, and its multi-report packages bring the per-report cost down substantially for frequent buyers and small dealers.

If you want the cheapest full report on a European car: Automano (€7.90)

We build this one, so treat the recommendation with appropriate suspicion and check the claim yourself.

Automano is the cheapest paid pan-European report we are aware of at €7.90, one payment, no subscription. It is built on official government registers — HistoVec in France, KBA records and Tachocheck in Germany, DVLA and MOT history in the UK, RDW in the Netherlands, CEPiK in Poland, DGT in Spain, NHTSA for anything with a US history — plus manufacturer recall data. The VIN decoder is free and unlimited with no signup.

What it does not do: it does not carry insurance-claim damage diagrams or archive auction photography. If your primary worry is hidden accident repair on an expensive car, carVertical’s damage data is better than ours and you should buy that instead.

Buy it when: you want the official-register layer — mileage consistency, inspection history, recalls, import traces, status — at the lowest price, or you are screening several cars before committing to a deeper report on one.

The rule that matters more than any of these

Run the free national service first. The UK, Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, France and Italy all publish official vehicle data at no cost. For a car that has spent its whole life in one of those countries, the free tier may be all you need, and no paid report changes that.

Paid reports earn their money on one specific problem: a car that has crossed a border. National registers stop at the border, so an imported car’s recorded history restarts on arrival — and the missing years are where rolled-back mileage and repaired damage survive.

Match the provider to the car. Not to the price, and not to whoever ranked themselves first.
