How to Check a Car's History for Free (and Where Free Tools Stop)

Free tools like NICB VINCheck, GOV.UK MOT history and NMVTIS give you part of a car's history. Here's what each one shows, its limits, and how to fill the gaps before you buy.

“Free car history check” is one of the most common searches before buying a used car. The good news: several genuinely free tools exist. The catch: each one shows only part of the picture, and the gaps are exactly where problems hide.

The free tools, by country

In the US:

  • NICB VINCheck — free, flags whether a car has been reported stolen or declared a salvage/total loss by participating insurers. It’s a yes/no flag, not a full history.
  • NMVTIS (vehiclehistory.gov) — the official title-history database; the title-brand data is authoritative, with full reports through approved providers.

In the UK:

  • GOV.UK — free MOT history (including the mileage at each test) and tax/vehicle details from the DVLA, by registration number.

Everywhere, free VIN decoders give you the specifications from the 17-character code.

Always run these first — they cost nothing and catch the obvious problems.

Where the free tools stop

None of them is a complete history:

  • US free tools flag theft or salvage, but not the mileage trail, ownership depth, or minor accident history.
  • GOV.UK covers MOT and tax only — no ownership or damage record.
  • Free VIN decoders give the specs but no history at all.
  • Critically, none of them cross-references another country’s records. For an imported car, the local history restarts on import — which is where rolled-back odometers and foreign write-offs disappear.

How to fill the gaps

For a first check without depending on the seller, decode the VIN to confirm the make, model, trim and year.

For the history — especially on an imported car — a VIN report cross-references readings across borders (UK MOT, German KBA, Dutch RDW) and confirms recalls and title/salvage status, where the free national tools stop. That’s the logical complement: the free official check for the local record, an Automano report for what it can’t see, with no sign-up.

In short

Start with the free national tools — they’re free and catch the obvious. Decode the VIN for the specs. And for an imported car, or the moment a seller gets evasive, add a VIN report — that’s where the real transparency is.
