Old V5 vs current V5C format
The current V5C format has been in use since 2004, replacing the older V5. Both contain the VIN, but the V5C uses enhanced security features including a watermark and unique document reference number. The 17-character VIN follows the ISO 3779 international standard used across all EU and UK vehicles.
How to read section 4
Section 4 of the V5C is in the vehicle details area. The VIN is printed as 17 alphanumeric characters with no spaces. The letters I, O, and Q are never used to avoid confusion with 1, 0, and 9. If a character is unreadable, compare with the VIN on the vehicle itself.
VIN mismatch: what to do?
